School bags do us a lot of good, but often they go underappreciated; so as a campaign for awareness, BSB asked several Ateneans a few things about their school bags.

We all love our school bags for different reasons. Speaking from Fr. Dacanay’s lecture love is based on both symbol (material base) and meaning. Our bags carry our pile of readings, textbooks, notebooks, collection of pens, wallets, umbrella, water supply, health kit, calculator, phone, laptops . . . Sure they may cause our shoulder to become sore from time to time but they protect our baggage from the sun and rain. That’s the point of the bag, really.
They make school life a little bit better. If sadistic profs give us a truck load of reading, then, hey, at least we won’t have to carry it around. A quiz gone wrong? No problem, just chunk it in a small compartment (forget about it) and let your mind move on from the trauma. If it’s raining, just zip in your phone to keep it warm and dry.
Need I say more to stress how a good, quality school bag should be invested in with care?
They are generic, common, and there are instances when at least three others people around campus would have the exact same brand/style as your bag, but it’s the meaning they have to the individual that makes it special. That’s why we love our bags!
Sometimes we change bags like clothes, sometimes we use them till they’re torn and are in need of mending. Nevertheless, bags are faithful to their user’s needs. They are an extension of our character in most cases—our channel of self-expression.
Boys like sturdy, macho bags (usually in dark, solid colors like black and grays), while some girls go for more style (whether it compliments their outfits) and less on the storage capabilities. Other girls go for big backpacks to save them the trouble regardless if their bags match their outfits at all. And of course, some people (ahem, dormers) don’t even bother with a bag!
Our school bags are what we are or who we want to be. From stylish to sturdy; big to small; sling, backpack, shoulder, or carry-on, they showcase our character and our individual preferences. So the next time it rains, let’s all take the time to wipe our bags dry and take care of them as a sign of appreciation for the faithful service.
